Musical | HKREP - 1894 Hong Kong Plague(10-16/1)
In the deadly pandemic, people are separated by death and torn apart by life
A stirring episode of Hong Kong people uniting against the great plague, with the combined forces of Chinese and Western medicines

The year is 1894, and Hong Kong is hit by the great plague with a mortality rate of 95%. Tai Ping Shan Street in Central is an epicentre of the pandemic. With no effective way to contain the desperate situation, the government has to forcibly quarantine those infected, and have the area razed to the ground, leaving large populations of people homeless.

Gerard Tsang, whose historical epics include Ebb and Evacuation Order, collaborates with Anthony Chan to co-write this new play. Based on a tragic episode in the history of Chinese people a century ago, with Sam Lam at the helm as director, this is the final installment of Tsang’s Hong Kong Trilogy. Adapted from true historical events, 1894 Hong Kong Plague – a Musical follows the story of Chinese doctor Wong who practices traditional Chinese medicine and his son, a student in Western medicine, depicting the conflicts between the two sets of medical traditions, felt all the more urgently in face of the deadly epidemic, as Hong Kong took the first steps of development as a small city. Through the people’s physical and mental suffering, their longing for peace and happiness only seems more tangible than ever.

With newly-arranged musical numbers a historically significant chapter of people uniting against a dangerous pandemic is told again.
